Lady Tigers’ interim head golf coach Katie Rump proved to be prophetic Tuesday as Memphis won the team and individual championships at the 2001 Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate golf tourney.
Rump told The Daily Helmsman last week she thought her team had a good chance of winning the 11-team tournament, which was held at Memphis National Golf Club in Collierville and included Louisville, Southern Miss and Central Florida, among others.
Behind first- and second-place individual finishes from sophomores Jennifer Jaszek and Meaghan Francella, last year’s Conference USA Freshman of the Year, the Tigers won the team competition by a total of 22 strokes.
“It is always hard to open the season with a tournament at home,” Rump said. “There are so many distractions. But the team concentrated on the task at hand and I’m proud of their win.”
Memphis, which had four of five golfers finish in the top seven, shot rounds of 304-303-308 for a total score of 915, 51 strokes over par. Central Florida finished second, shooting 320-309-308, while Louisville (316-313-312) finished third.
Jaszek, who shot a two-over-par 146 through 36 holes on Monday, finished the tourney eight strokes over for first place. Three strokes behind her were fellow Tiger Francella and Central Florida’s Federica Piovano, who each tied for second with a total score of 227.
“I can not take any credit for this win,” Rump said of her first victory as a collegiate coach. “I inherited a great team and they have a deep desire to win tournaments.”
Football
The University of Memphis announced earlier this week that all active members of the United States military and their families may attend Saturday’s football game against South Florida at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for free.
“This is something we would like to do to honor those men and women who serve our country in so many ways,” athletic director R.C. Johnson said. “This has been a very emotional week for our nation and during these tense times, we need to give these individuals who protect our country a chance to relax and spend time with their families.”
Military personnel will be asked to present their identification to gain admission at Gate 2 of the Liberty Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
