The men’s cross country team finished second in team competition Saturday at the Murray State Classic in Murray, Ken., placing four runners in the top 10.

Freshman Derek Nakluski led Memphis on the four-mile course in a time of 21:30 for a third-place finish. Junior Balazs Laszlo finished fourth overall in 21:53 while freshman Ricky McLain rounded out the top five in 21:59.

Host Murray State won the seven-team competition with 32 points. Memphis finished with 38 points.

“It was a solid performance considering we have had only two weeks of training,” head coach Glenn Hays said. “We should get stronger as the season goes on as our training picks up. We are a young team, too. So as the guys get more races under their belts, we will improve.”

The Lady Tiger soccer team got its first win of the season Sunday as it shut out UT-Martin 3-0 at Echles Field behind goals from freshman Angela Willoughby, junior Ali Baker and junior Becca Amrozowicz.

Memphis (1-2-1), which had three players with five or more shots for the game, outshot the Skyhawks 24-4. The Tigers managed to keep Martin from even attempting a shot in the second half.

Memphis was playing on just one night’s rest after lightening storms in Indiana pushed Friday’s evening match against Evansville to Saturday morning.

On Saturday, the Tigers were shut out for the first time this season, losing 2-0 to the Aces, who were ranked No. 9 last week in the Great Lakes Region by CollegeSoccer.com.

The men’s soccer team is still looking for its first win of the season after a fourth-place finish this weekend at the third annual Diadora Memphis Invitational at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Memphis (0-2-2, 0-0-1 in C-USA) was shut out 4-0 Sunday by Illinois-Chicago, which grabbed its first win of the season and a second-place finish in the four-team tournament.

On Friday, Memphis overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit against conference foe Charlotte to push the 49ers into a 1-1 double-overtime draw. Senior Lars Thorstensen scored the Tigers lone goal on a penalty kick during the 68th minute.
