Hale has it wrong: U of M does have parking problem

This letter is in response to Diane Hale’s remarks in the Aug. 30 edition of The Daily Helmsman.

The article states Ms. Hale said The U of M does not have a parking problem.

I am an English major, and am not particularly brilliant in mathematics, yet even I can do simple subtraction.

There are approximately 20,000 students enrolled at The U of M, and The University provides 9,100 parking places. This equation leaves a deficit of 10,900 places.

Ms. Hale continued her comments stating that “parking is a privilege” and that students should not expect to park close to their classes.

That’s fine with me, as long as Ms. Hale doesn’t expect to park close to her parking office.

I’m sure with a reserved parking spot, Ms. Hale doesn’t have any parking problems.

Gated parking is not the answer, as The University routinely oversells each lot. This gimmick is simply another way for The University to take our money!

So I suggest the following solution to Ms. Hale:

Ms. Hale can enroll in the “Concepts of Numbers” course at The University in an effort to understand the absurdity of her statement regarding the parking situation.

I am sure there will then be 20 to 25 extra parking spaces, including hers, at the Parking Office.

Ms. Hale can open these spaces up to the students, which will alleviate the headaches of 20 to 25 students who shouldn’t have a problem with parking at The University of Memphis.
