Fair to get underway Thursday

The 145th annual Mid-South Fair will kick off on Thursday, bringing a host of food, games, rides and shows to Memphis.

There will be an abundance of free entertainment, including nightly concerts on the mainstage (for a complete list of those acts, see page 12) as well as a variety of other shows. Robinson’s Racing Pigs — which have been featured on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as on television networks in Australia, Japan and Europe — can be seen daily 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Howard Helmer, the Guinness Book of World Records holder will demonstrate his unique talent: he’s the world’s fastest omelet maker (he can make up to 427 omelets in 30 minutes). He can be seen Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

And for those who get hungry watching Helmer prepare his eggs, there will be no short supply of food and drinks. Vendors will be on hand selling such traditional fair items as: funnel cakes, pizzas, coconut coolers, homemade ice cream, green apple curly fries, baklava, frozen custard and catfish, to name just a few.

For those wishing to sample a few beauty products, ThermaSilk will have a display vehicle and salon studio set-up at the Southern Avenue Gate on Sept. 29 and 30. Visitors to the ThermaSilk vehicle will receive complimentary samples, as well as being given the opportunity to use virtual-reality styling technology and receive a free heat styling using ThermaSilk products.

The Pipkin International Pavilion will host a “multicultural” showcase, featuring countries from around the world. Travel agencies will offer information about international vacations, while various booths will allow visitors the chance to “shop around the world.”

The Brakefield Imagination Hall for youth will offer storytelling as well as an interactive media exhibit titled, “Videotopia,” which will explore videogames, virtual reality and computers.

The Mid-South Fair PRCA Championship Rodeo will take place Sept. 21-24, and tickets will run between $12 and $15, which includes free fair admission.

Prices for the fair are $7 for anyone 48 inches tall and over. Admission for those under 48 inches tall is $3, and children under the age of three are admitted for free.

Wristbands, which allow unlimited rides, are available for $14 on the following dates: Sept. 20, Sept. 21, Sept. 24, Sept. 25, Sept. 26, Sept. 27 and Sept. 30.

Family FunPaks (which include discounted admission tickets, ride vouchers and vendor coupons) are available Sept. 5-19 at participating Kroger stores.

They may also be purchased at the Guest Services Window at Libertyland each Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday they can be purchased at the Mid-South Fair Office at 940 Early Maxwell from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
