SAC to host welcome back cookout for students on University Center Mall

The Student Activities Council at The University of Memphis will kick off its fall festivities today by having a welcome back cookout from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the University Center Mall.

The SAC is entirely composed of U of M students and hosts events throughout the year for the enjoyment of the student body.

The programs provided by the SAC include entertainment ranging from cookouts to concerts. Other events sponsored by SAC involve cultural awareness, preservation of University tradition and exploration of new campus ideas and issues.

This year’s University traditions chairperson is Kate Hill, a junior at the U of M, who said SAC is expecting this to be a great year.

“The U of M is a diverse campus, and we try to have events that will attract a diverse audience,” Hill said.

In addition to bringing entertainment to U of M students, the council also coordinates Welcome Back Week, Homecoming and the Spring Fling.

In the past, SAC has been responsible for bringing to campus such celebrities as Adam Sandler, Coolio and Sinbad, as well as model Tyra Banks and musical groups like the Indigo Girls.

This semester, SAC will bring the musical group Fuel to the Michael D. Rose Theater to perform on Sept. 6.

Other events planned for the semester include lectures, concerts and activities throughout Welcome Back Week and Homecoming.

SAC usually gets $434,000 allocated to them for each academic year to spend on events. Most of the events the council plans are free to students with a valid U of M identification card.

For students interested in getting involved in SAC there is a “Jump into the SAC” information and committee meeting on Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. in the Faulkner Lounge in the University Center.
