Former University of Memphis head football coach Rip Scherer was hired Tuesday as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Kansas.
Scherer, 48, was fired in November after his sixth straight losing season. As head coach of the Tigers from 1995 to 2000, Scherer amassed a record of 22-44. Last week, he signed a contract buyout with The U of M which will pay him about $175,000 over the next three years.
Scherer was hired at The U of M in January 1995 in hopes of bolstering the Tigers offensive attack after directing James Madison to a combined 29-19 record over four years.
Last November, however, he was relieved of his coaching duties by U of M Athletic Director R.C. Johnson after the team finished 4-7.
In December, Johnson promoted Tommy West, the team’s defensive coordinator who led the Tigers’ defense to a sixth-ranked finish nationally, to head coach.
