The tree-lined walkways and well-manicured gardens that cover The University of Memphis, as well as those who care for them, were awarded the Mayor’s Award of Excellence from the Memphis City Beautiful Commission last month.
The University received the award for having the best overall appearance of local schools, hospitals and businesses, beating out 94 other local organizations that participated in the competition.
“It’s recognition for the work we do,” said U of M director of custodial and landscaping services Calvin Strong. “But (the award) goes beyond just the look of the campus.”
Strong said The University was also recognized for its recycling program, which received bonus points in the contest. Criteria also included contributions to The University neighborhood, waste handling and litter prevention as well as horticultural improvements.
“Most people deal with a very limited area (to maintain) and don’t have the problems we have,” Strong said. “We have a lot more issues to deal with.”
Strong said his staff of about 25 groundskeepers must maintain areas that students regularly throw trash in or trample over. Other organizations in the contest usually don’t have to worry about someone coming in behind them and ruining the landscape.
