The University of Memphis volleyball team will end their spring season this weekend in a tournament at Austin Peay State University on Saturday.
The Tigers are currently 9-4 in the spring and are coming off a 4-0 sweep through the Mississippi State tournament last weekend.
They defeated Ole Miss, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Louisiana State and host Mississippi State.
The Tigers were carried by strong play from the seniors and head coach Carrie Yerty said this was the best she has seen her team play since she has been at The U of M.
“We played at MSU like we were one step ahead of teams the whole time and we were clearly in better shape physically than they were,” Yerty said.
“Their work ethic is great, and is really paying off now with five seniors.”
The Tigers look to gain in the fall season from the play of freshman Brittany Barnett, who was a member of the Conference USA all-freshman team, as well as senior Ginger Garrett.
Yerty said the offense is in the hands of senior Amie Hamilton, who served six straight aces against Ole Miss last weekend.
“Her jump serve is unstoppable,” Yerty said.
Defensively, Hamilton will be joined by senior Adrianne Edmonds, who led the team in digs last weekend, as they look to shut down opponents in the fall.
The Tigers are returning nine players from last year’s team that finished 13-20.
The U of M hosted a spring tournament in March at The Larry O. Finch Recreation Center, which showcased teams such as Mississippi State, Tennessee-Martin, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Illinois, Middle Tennessee State, Samford, Jackson State, Tennessee State and Christian Brothers.
The tournament this weekend will feature teams such as Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and Austin Peay.
Memphis will begin its fall schedule at the UNC-Asheville Tournament on August 31.
