The Administration Building is getting a facelift.
Water intrusion and freeze thawing cycles have caused significant damage to the older parts of the building, according to Bill Underwood, manager of carpentry and general maintenance for The University of Memphis.
The renovation is expected to last until Dec. 14. Most of the repairs are focused on the terra cotta facades located on the east side of the building. Some brick repair work will also be completed.
Underwood said waiting any longer to make the repairs could have been disastrous for the 89-year-old building.
“It’s not going to last another five to six years without repairs,” he said. “Eventually, the building would have just collapsed.”
Underwood said some University employees and students may be forced to take alternate routes around the building.
Elsewhere on campus, construction continues on the school's new bookstore, slated to replace the old UC bookstore later this year.
