Tigers break out in Blue/Gray game

A new head coach and a new offensive scheme are what Tiger football fans can expect in the 2001 season.

First-year coach Tommy West showcased the Tigers' new, no-huddle offense during Saturday night's Blue-Gray Game at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

The Gray team put 35 points on the scoreboard during the 100-play scrimmage, as the Tigers saw action from three quarterbacks -- Travis Anglin, Neil Suber and freshman redshirt Danny Wimprine.

Sophomore Scott Scherer did not play, due to a concussion he received during a scrimmage last Wednesday.

Anglin, who was sidelined for most of the 2000 season with an injured ankle, was named the game's Most Valuable Player, as he threw for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while completing nine of 11 pass attempts.

He also rushed for 36 yards and scored a touchdown as the Gray team accounted for 480 yards of total offense.

Anglin began the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Tripps Higgins, and one play later connected on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Johnson.

Wimprine completed three of seven passes for 30 yards and one touchdown.

Tailbacks Aaron Meadows, Sugar Sanders and Jeremiah Bonds all rushed for positive yardage.

Meadows rushed for 60 and Bonds added 49 yards. Sanders rushed for 55 yards on five carries.

Junior strong safety Glenn Sumter had a team high seven tackles and cornerback Anthony Harden also had six tackles.

Jamie Green and Quincy Stephenson had the game's only interceptions.

Stephenson intercepted Wimprine and was stopped from scoring by the freshman quarterback.

Offensive lineman Jason Austin was injured in the scrimmage, and did not return to the game.

The Tigers finish spring practice with two practice sessions this week as they look ahead to the first game of the season.

The University of Memphis begins the season September 2 at Mississippi State in a nationally televised game. The Tigers' home opener is September 8 against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
