Tigers and Ole Miss set for rematch tonight

The University of Memphis baseball team will take on Ole Miss tonight at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

The rematch was originally scheduled for yesterday, but was postponed because of inclement weather.

The Tigers' (15-11, 3-6) last meeting with the Rebels (23-8-1, 9-3) was played at Autozone Park in downtown Memphis on March 21.

The Rebels, then ranked 19th, were dealt their sixth loss of the season by the Tigers with 2,957 fans attending the game.

The Tigers topped the Rebels for the first time since the 1998 season with a score of 3-1.

"The last time we played them, we played at Autozone," Coach Dave Anderson said. "The guys played an outstanding game against Ole Miss."

Ryan O'Malley was the winning pitcher, only allowing one run in his five and two-thirds innings of play.

Daniel Uggla hit his ninth home run of the season with a 388-foot solo shot.

Since the contest, the Rebels have fared a little better than Memphis.

Ole Miss has gone 5-2 since its loss to The U of M including a three-game sweep against fellow SEC team, Alabama.

The Tigers have gone 3-4 since their win against the Rebels.

Their last game was a 15-8 win over South Florida on Sunday.

After trailing 6-4, the Tigers staged a huge comeback by scoring 10 runs in the seventh inning.

Joshua Cartwright (2-1) recorded his second win after pitching four innings.

He only allowed one run off of three hits and struck out four.

The 15th win this season for the Tigers already matches their win total for last year.

The Rebels have moved up in the rankings since their loss to The U of M.

The latest ESPN Collegiate Baseball polls rank Ole Miss 16th.

"It's a big game for us," Anderson said. "The players realize it's big."

The Tigers only win against a ranked team was against Ole Miss in their last meeting.

Anderson said the Rebel's ranking doesn't affect his team's mindset going into tonight's game.

"They've got a good team," Anderson said. "They were ranked last time we played them. These two teams match up.

They have a history. The ranking doesn't change that."

Weather permitting, the two rival teams will take the field at 6:30 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
