IMAX film gives an 'All Access' pass

Starting this Friday, Memphians will have the chance to get up close and personal with some of the hottest recording artists around.

The Union Planters IMAX Theater at the Pink Palace Museum will begin presenting All Access, a rock documentary that takes you behind the scenes of many of today's hottest tours.

According to Dan Hope, community relations manager for the Pink Palace, All Access has a lot to offer music fans.

"First and foremost (audiences) can look forward to seeing some great performances by everyone from Santana to Memphis' own Al Green," Hope said.

The film will also feature acts such as Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Sting and B.B. King.

"What makes this film interesting is you also get to go backstage and hear candid comments from the artists as well as get the backstage pass to see what it's like on-stage during a performance," Hope said.

According to Hope, this event will likely appeal to many college students.

"I really do believe that college students will be interested in this film because it features many of the most popular artists today, including Dave Matthews Band, Trey Anastasio from Phish, Kid Rock, Macy Gray and a whole host of artists," Hope said. "It's essentially a rock concert."

Making this "rock concert" even more memorable is the new sound system recently installed at the Union Planter IMAX, called DDP2.

This powerful new system contains six channels of compression-free digital sound, making it one of the highest-quality sound systems in the world.

"To put it in laymen's terms, it's a new digital sound system that gives a much crisper, clearer sound and lets you hear all the different nuances of the instruments and vocals in this film, as well as other films that we are bringing into the IMAX theatre," Hope said.

The DDP2 system has been in place for several months, but All Access is a film that will perhaps most thoroughly make use of its benefits.

"It was installed in February, so it debuted with the Alaska film," Hope said. "All Access, of course, is a film that really takes advantage of this new digital sound system," Hope said. "The theater sound system is a big state-of-the-art sound system that really brings across this rock concert the way it was meant to be heard."
