Want a chance to voice your opinions about on- and off-campus issues and activities?
Well, you will be given the chance when The Daily Helmsman conducts a readers' choice survey to be published in a special issue, "The Helmsman's Hits."
"I think it will give U of M students a chance to voice their opinions about subjects that actually affect them," said L. Kate Crawford, editor in chief at The Daily Helmsman.
Students and faculty may vote on 24 topics, such as the best and worst SAC events for this year, the greatest point of pride for The University of Memphis and the best and worst dormitories on campus. Other on-campus categories include: most pointless class required for graduation, greatest source of embarrassment for The University and most memorable Tiger sporting event.
Readers may also vote in off-campus categories, such as the best bar, the best date idea for $20 or less and the best Memphis-based band/group/musician. Other off-campus categories include: best dance club, best store to buy CDs, best and worst student jobs and best place to get a good, cheap meal.
"I think the beautiful clock tower that tells the wrong time, but plays Christmas music, is an embarrassment to The University," said Courtney Carmicheal, a freshman undecided major, who said she wouldn't mind casting a ballot for the greatest source of embarrassment for The University category.
"I am for that," said Lenny West, a sophomore nursing major. "I think people should be allowed to express themselves."
Everyone who submits a ballot will be automatically entered in a drawing for free movie passes donated by Malco Theaters of Memphis. Provide your name and telephone number, if you wish to be eligible. Seven winners will receive coupons for free tickets to five movies of the winner's choice.
Readers may mail their ballots to The Daily Helmsman, 3711 Veterans Avenue, Meeman Journalism, 38152. Or ballots can be dropped off at the business office, room 113 of the Meeman Journalism Building, faxed to 678-4792 or filled out via the Internet at www.dailyhelmsman.com.
The deadline for voting is Thursday, April 19, and the results will be published on April 24. See Page 6 for the official ballot.
