Abdel-Jaber says join ARMY

Achieving Results in the Millennium Year (ARMY), that's the slogan Karimeh Abdel-Jaber and Scott Bendure are campaigning for in the upcoming Student Government Association Election.

Abdel-Jaber, who is the interim president of the SGA, said she wants to have a cohesive SGA which can work toward getting results for the student body.

Those sentiments were echoed by her running mate, Bendure, who said he hoped their party would unify the senate.

"I believe the power needs to be reinstalled back into SGA," Bendure said. "I believe the SGA can make a lot of difference on campus."

Abdel-Jaber, 21, said the SGA has a lot of internal problems, which makes if difficult to achieve results. She said the problems are the result of dissension among senators and a lack of cohesion.

Abdel-Jaber also said she feels the administration, faculty and the student body don't respect the SGA and her goal is to make the SGA more focused.

"I feel The University doesn't listen to the student body," Abdel-Jaber said. "I want students to come to SGA and get things done."

If elected, Abdel-Jaber said she wants to make students aware of what the SGA is doing by instituting a newsletter twice a semester. She also wants the senators to be more proactive. She said she will plan rallies where senators talk to students to find out what they want.

Abdel-Jaber said she has people from the different organizations on campus on her ticket which she feels will bring diversity to the SGA.

"We have Cephus Richard III,"Abdel-Jaber said. "He's from The Black Scholars Unlimited and Michael David Brown who's from the school of business."

Abdel-Jaber also said the senators would follow-up on bills.

"We want to be an organization that does what we say we do," Abdel-Jaber said. "We want the students, the faculty, the staff and the entire administration to know we are achieving results."

One issue Abdel-Jaber plans to tackle is the plus/minus grading system. She said she doesn't believe they can get rid of the system, but wants to make it more student friendly by putting which professors are choosing to use it in the class schedules.
