University of Memphis Tiger junior second baseman Daniel Uggla was named National College Baseball Writers Association's national hitter of the week, making him the third Tiger in history to receive this prestigious honor.
Uggla was given this honor after an impressive week at bat for the Tiger team. He raised his batting average 70 points over the five games played last week, driving in 17 RBIs slamming four home runs, three doubles and a triple.
He has struck out only twice in 21 at-bats over the five games last week.
Uggla's riding a wave of success this week; he was also named Conference USA's hitter of the week on Monday.
Uggla is one of only two Tigers to have earned this honor from C-USA, the most recent being in 1998.
He has led his team this past week batting at an average of .470. During the last 17 games, he has had 13 doubles, eight home runs and 28 RBIs.
Uggla has tied several school records and pulled in three home runs and nine RBIs in the victory against Eastern Illinois last Wednesday.
Last season, Uggla made appearances at second baseman, shortstop, third base and catcher, displaying his capability and versatility.
Uggula was a fixture in the Tiger starting line- up last season, starting in 46 of the 49 games.
In those 49 games, he finished second on the team, with a total of four home runs.
He had a batting average of .269 over 44 games.
In 93 at-bats, Uggla totaled two home-runs, 10 RBIs and went 3-for- 6 with two RBIs and two runs in the Cincinnati game.
Uggla honed his skills playing for Columbia Central high school, batting .420 his senior year finishing with a total of seven home runs.
He earned all-district and all-regional honors and lettered two seasons in baseball.
The Tigers play host to Ole Miss at AutoZone Park Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and this weekend, they host the University of Houston in a three game series, to be played at USA stadium in Millington.
