Every student needs a quiet place to study. And although nearly half the semester is gone, many U of M students say they're still searching for that perfect place to study, both on and off campus.
So, where is the ideal place?
Freshman criminal justice major Lyncola Odell said she believes the best place to study is the Ned McWherter Library, simply because no one is there to distract her.
"In my opinion, the place to study is the library -- on the fourth floor where the tables are," Odell said. "The worst place to study is in your dorm room, because you've got your radio, your telephone and your TV. Even though you try to cut them all off, you still need them on and it is really distracting. Another good place to go to is the Peabody Library."
Other students said dorms are the best place to study. In most dorms, each floor is equipped with a lounge where resident students can have a quiet place to study for a test or do homework.
Faith Seifuddin, a sophomore journalism major, said her favorite place to study on campus is in her dorm.
"The best place for me to study is in the lounge on my floor in Richardson Towers North," Seifuddin said. "I study there because it's quiet and no one is ever in there, and it is a peaceful environment to study in."
Voice performance major Will Kelley said one of his favorite places to study on campus is the music lounge, while his least favorite location is the Tiger Den.
"The best and worst place is the music lounge," Kelley said. "In one case, it is comfy. On the other hand, you see a lot of people. I don't like the library either because the library is usually filled with people talking about stuff other than school work. The Tiger Den is bad too, because of the nauseous smell of the fake food and all the noise going on."
Like many other students, Carl Rosen, a sophomore sports management major, said he believes the comfort of the dorm room provides the worst atmosphere to study because of the many distractions in his room.
"I think the absolute worst place to study is in my own room," Rosen said. "There is the computer, my next door neighbors -- not to mention the temptation to go to sleep on the bed. On top of all that, there are some people who are yelling and singing down the hallways. If I had to choose one place and study, it would definitely be the library."
