Students ready to show off during spring break

University of Memphis students are working hard in the gyms and workout centers with an eye on the clock.

Spring Break is rapidly approaching and the time to obtain that perfect beach physique is limited.

"I've got a week. I'm going to Panama," Kristina Vaccaro, a freshman nursing major said.

Christy Crabtree, a graduate business student, said she has plans for next week, but that her motivation comes from a New Year's resolution to work out.

David Doss, a sophomore computer engineering major, said that working out is a constructive way to spend his time.

"It's like a substitute for quitting smoking for me," Doss said.

Most students said they manage to find time to work out.

Kris Gregory, senior finance major, said he sticks to a weekly routine.

"I usually come in between class and work," Gregory said. "I usually work out five times a week and lift heavy weights three times a week."

"I don't have a problem getting three times a week in, but much more than that is a problem," Crabtree said.

Doss said that he works out at the Student Recreation Center immediately following his classes.

"Eventually, it's weaved into your schedule, where it is a priority," Doss said.

Nicholas Cupples, a graduate business student, maximizes his workout

experience on the step machine at the recreation center.

"One of the reasons I can validate coming in here is because I can actually study and get a lot done," Cupples said.

Vaccaro said that occasionally the center is crowded and there is a wait for certain machines, but she likes the facilities and the convenience.

Gregory said that the center has become a popular place recently.

"During February and March it picks up pretty heavy, because everybody is in here working out, especially the girls," Gregory said.

Each student has their own particular routine or favorite exercise.

"I usually start out with cardio, and then go on to something else like weights," Crabtree said.

Trang Duong, a senior nursing major, was trying out the exercise bike yesterday afternoon.

"This is the first time I have ever come here, but I like it so far," Duong said.

Doss said he concentrates on an upper body workout on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while switching to a lower body workout on Tuesday and Thursday.

Motivation varies for these students, but they all strive to get or stay in shape, whether it is for next week, summer or for health.
