Soccer team celebrates contributions of former players

The University of Memphis soccer team hosted the first annual Tim McCage Tournament this past weekend.

The purpose of the tournament was to celebrate his contributions to soccer.

The tournament is named for McCage who was a member of the Craigmont high school team for four years.

He was often the scoring leader with the combination of goals and assists.

"Tim played soccer for me for three years at Craigmont high school. During that time he became my leader both on the athletic field and in the classroom," coach Phillip Weaver said. "As a senior, he earned All-Metro honors and was selected as Tennessee Player of the year in the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association."

They were host to 20 teams which included Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, and also a few local teams from the Memphis Shelby County area.

The matches were played with a 7v7 format.

Memphis alumni squad took home the trophy after knocking off Southwest Missouri State 3-2 in the final.

Former Tiger Tommy White was selected Most Valuable Player after scoring two goals in the final and scoring a hat trick in the semi-final match which resulted in a 3-2 victory over cross-town rival Christian Brothers University.

The alumni squad consisted of the five seniors from last seasons squad and also included four current Tigers and one alumni.

The five seniors included Nick Glaser, David Medlock, Ryan Swaigert, and Michael White.

Current Tigers on the squad were rising senior Darren Nebard and rising sophomores Dusty Brezovsky, Nelson Ennis and Josh Isaacs.

Former Tiger midfielder Carl Schmitt rounded out the team.

The tournament will become an annual event and will continue to he hosted by the U of M.

McCage was a member of the 1972 Rangers soccer club team from under 12-19.

During that period the 72 Rangers won the State of Tennessee Championship as under 14, under 16 and under 19.

He represented the state in the Region III tournament.

The under 19 team lost in the semi-finals in overtime.

"It was a privilege to have coached Tim on the Rangers' 72 team for six years and three state championships.

He was the Field General of the team and was always self motivated on game day.

My memories of that team and its accomplishments along with Tim's leadership will never be forgotten," Rangers coach Don Hodge said.

McCage also participated in a variety of sports including baseball and sports an has received a host of awards his family was present at the presentation of the trophy at the tournament.
