The NCAA Thursday granted an appeal filed by The University of Memphis concerning funds raised for Lisa Means, the mother of U of M football player Albert Means.
Means' son's status as a student-athlete had prevented her from accepting donations raised to help pay back rent on her Frayser home.
She will be allowed to accept the funds pending verification from The University that the donors to the fund are not Athletic Department boosters.
According to Means' attorney, Claiborne Ferguson, NCAA officials had stated they would enforce a rule prohibiting student-athletes and their families from accepting money, directly or indirectly, in return for athletic services.
The Lisa Means Recovery Fund, initiated by former federal prosecutor Robert Kahn, has raised more than $3,000 to help Means, who hasn't paid rent on her home since October.
