Letter to the Editor: Pritt column on school shootings was appalling

This letter is in regards to Drew Pritt's appalling column in Wednesday's paper (March 7) about the recent school shooting in California.

This column is why school violence is still happening.

Mr. Pritt, it is society's fault!

As a teacher, my job is to do the best I can to make sure every child is treated the right way. How can I do this if people like you cannot see into the heart of a child and search out what's really going on?

If 53 people heard this student threaten violence, why, Mr. Pritt, did they not say anything?

People like you make my life a nightmare. You made a comment about "getting picked on ... but I dealt with it." Not very well, it looks like -- you're a supposedly educated college student making fun of a high school freshman. Sound like a pattern to you? It sure does to me.

No, he should not have taken a gun to school, and yes, it was wrong to kill and wound all those people.

But maybe if we took the time to actually listen to our young people and act when they tell us something disturbing, maybe this society would change.

I myself hope, Mr. Pritt, you would take on a day in my shoes and see just how much society is not providing for the future adults of the world!
