Police and fire officials were called to the Meeman Journalism building late Wednesday night after a female student reported she smelled smoke near the first-floor vending area.
A campus officer arrived on the scene around 10 p.m. and found a small paper fire burning just outside Room 124, an alternative processing lab.
The fire, which caused a small amount of damage to the floor and to the outside of the room's door, was put out by the officer with a nearby extinguisher before the arrival of the Memphis Fire Department, according to police reports.
Although no one was injured, students and faculty members were evacuated from the building for safety precautions.
