Cleanliness is next to godliness.

The old may hold true elsewhere, but for many University of Memphis residents in campus dorms, cleanliness is simply impossible.

Freshman sports management major Rob Rosen said he does not have much time to straighten up his room. According to Rosen, his roommate is a cleaning fanatic, compared to his laid-back approach to cleaning.

"My roommate cleans 19 times a day," Rosen said. "My roommate cleans the bathroom after every single usage."

Does Rosen bother to help his roommate out? Well, Rosen said cleaning up is not the first thing on his to-do list.

"I kinda just leave stuff there," Rosen said. "No, I don't even clean up."

J. Myers, a freshman economics major, said it is the responsibility of all residents to keep the dorm in the cleanest conditions.

"Cleanliness is extremely important to me," Rosen said. "First of all in the whole dorm, period, and the dorm room because we're all sharing (it). When my friends come in, they look at the whole room and not just one side."

Freshman voice performance major Will Kelley said with his busy schedule, tidying his room has proven to be a real challenge. Kelley said juggling school, work and religious responsibilities interferes with the amount of time he spends on his room.

"I get up, go to class," Kelley said. "Since I'm a voice major, I'm usually in the practice rooms trying to keep my voice skills up. Plus, I have a job waiting tables that keeps me out on the weekends. I also have a job as a church assistant choir director and section leader."

Kelley said when his dorm room looks like a disaster area he does not allow company to visit, even fellow church members.

"I don't have company come by, " Kelley said. "I tell them my room is in shambles. I'm honest about it. My church members are not going to know that this is my room."

Myers said it is important to keep things in order to ensure the room has more space.

"It's just too cluttered. When two people share a small room and we have all of our things in there then you need to keep it clean, because if it's clean you have more space," Myers said.

Kelly said his room has been cluttered for a few weeks.

Despite the delay in cleaning his quarters, Kelley said he is usually a neat and orderly guy, although his floor is coated with papers, clothes and other unidentifiable things.

"I'm not that big of a slob usually, but this semester has been (hard)," Kelley said. "Plus my roommate has moved out."
