They have sold over 70 million albums in the US alone, making them the fifth best-selling band in US music history. Their 17th album, Stiff Upper Lip was released last year.
Now the tour is underway, and AC/DC, led by Angus Young and Brian Johnson, is coming to the Pyramid with Slash's Snakepit on March 24.
Kevin Cubbins, former University of Memphis student and musician, said an AC/DC show is absolutely incredible.
"I can die and say I've been. I'd hate to be 80 years old and not be able to say that I went to an AC/DC concert," Cubbins said.
Tickets for the Stiff Upper Lip tour went on sale Saturday, Feb. 24 and so far, due to their promotions and loyal fans, has been AC/DC's best-selling tour to date.
One promotion that many of the cities in the tour are participating in is the Angus Army contest, which gets its name from Angus Young, the energetic lead guitarist for the band.
In Memphis, Rock 103 will be running contests and the winners will join the Angus Army. Once in the Angus Army, the winners will report to an Angus Army bus the day of the concert (March 24), where they will be given the official Angus Army uniform, which is Angus' schoolboy outfit.
Throughout the day of the show, the Angus Army will promote the concert around Memphis by giving out AC/DC paraphernalia at specific checkpoints. That evening, the Angus Army will be escorted to the Pyramid where they will receive VIP seats for the show.
Another contest AC/DC will be using to promote their show is called "Want to Sound Like You're in AC/DC." This contest allows fans to fill out an entry blank at participating music retailers. If chosen, one winner will receive a Gibson Angus Young Signature SG electric guitar, a Gretsch G2910 electric guitar, a Musicman Stingray bass, a Sonor Force 2001 drum kit, a Marshall amp, an Ampeg bass amp, a Shure wireless microphone and the hat of lead singer, Brian Johnson.
Greg Lowry, the sales and marketing manager of the Pyramid, said they are expecting 15,000 tickets to be sold by the night of the show.
"AC/DC always attracts a good heavy-metal audience," said Lowry. "The audience ranges from college kids to people in their mid-forties."
Because of AC/DC's unchanging and bluesy bare-bones rock 'n' roll style, they have been able to withstand time and plow over any fads in their way.
"They've stuck to their guns and it's always worked," said Mark Stewart, a University of Memphis graduate in commercial music. "It's rock 'n roll with no tricks."
Not only has AC/DC's style kept them alive, but they are also known for their loud and pumped up concerts.
"Their show is loud as hell," Lowry said. "It's just a fun visual and musical show."
On top of AC/DC's heart-pounding volume, they also incorporate a lot of theatrical elements into their show.
"They have a wrecking ball, explosions everywhere, and when they play 'Those About to Rock, We Salute You,' they fire off these two big cannons," Cubbins said. "Then Angus gets on this roadies' shoulders and they run out into the audience. It's just an awesome show."
Tickets can be purchased for $35-$45 from Ticketmaster.
