Rifle team breaks record; aims to be number one

The University of Memphis rifle team is shooting holes through their competition.

The team competed for one week straight and had some very good outings.

On Jan. 25 the rifle team defeated Mercer University and set a new record with a total score of 1516.

Junior Charles Moss led the squad with 390 points out of 400 which sealed the Tigers' victory.

His mark set a new individual record.

Junior Hateisha Williamson shot a 389 while senior John Carter scored 383 points.

Sophomore Jesse Griggs added 354 points to the squad while freshman Amber Rikard set a new personal best with her score of 357.

Mercer University put up a good fight but only managed to score 1350 in the meeting.

Two days after setting a new school record, the Tiger squad etched in a new school record with a score of 1524 points at the University of Tennessee-Martin invitational.

Memphis finished second out of nine teams only being beaten by Alaska which is ranked No.1 in the nation.

Williamson, Moss and Carter all placed in the top ten.

The Tigers finished off their competition with a meeting on Sunday Jan. 28 where they placed seventh out of 15 teams at the Withrow Invitational hosted by Murray State University.

Carter led Memphis with 383 points followed by Moss with 380 points 379 points while Griggs and Rikard both tied their career bests of 347 and 357 respectively.

The rifle team will travel to Murray, Kentucky on Feb. 11 for the Sectional Tournament which will determine their national record.

The team is coached by Butch Woolbright and John Dowdy.
