Men's golf looks ahead to new season; players must earn spot

After a rocky start to their season last Fall, The University of Memphis men's golf team is looking to start anew this Spring.

In their last competition ending Feb. 12, the Tigers finished ninth at the Beau Rivage College Classic held at Windace Country Club in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Jason Wyatt tied for third individually, finishing four over par.

This weekend the Tigers will travel to Tampa Bay, Fla., to compete in the Ron Smith USF Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida.

As of yesterday, four of the five golfers representing the U of M had not yet been chosen to compete in the tournament.

"They have to play to earn their spot in competition," head coach Jim Cook said. "Jason earned his spot by placing in the last tournament. There are four places still open."

The U of M golf team currently has ten players, two of which are redshirted.

Eight golfers vie for the five opening spots of each competition.

Golfers eligible for tournament play consist of two seniors with the rest being freshmen and sophomores.

Currently, the golf team's standout is Jason Wyatt, a senior, whose golf game has continued to improve.

"He's stepped up a little bit," Cook said.

Experience is key in becoming a competitive golfer.

As many of his young players practice and compete, they will inevitably improve.

"I've got some really outstanding young men," Cook said. "They're going to be good players."

Competition in Florida begins at 7:45 am on Friday and lasts until Sunday.
