Drew Pritt has done it again. He has let his opinions override the actual facts.
In his Wednesday "On the Journey" column, he reported on how "The military is a good life."
Drew may have been an Air Force brat and sampled clean base-living and he probably had a mother or father who was an officer who made pretty good money.
And Drew is correct when he talks about the benefits of ROTC.
But he does not know, nor will he ever know about what being an ENLISTED person in the military is like.
What about the sailors and marines (including officers) who have to leave thier husbands and wives and newborn children behind while they board a ship for a six month cruise into dangerous waters?
I doubt that Drew will have a chance to experience this while being an Air Force officer.
I was in the military as an enlisted sailor for four years and I experienced pay that qualified for food stamps, sub-standard living conditions and poor leadership from officers.
I must have forgotten to sign up for that "big paycheck" that Drew spoke of.
Here's the facts: all branches of the military except the Marines miss their recruiting quota every year because of the fact that kids are smarter these days and have more computer knowledge.
The job market is pretty good right now and joining the military straight out of high school is not as big of an option as it was, say, 10 years ago.
Take it from someone who's been there and seen the "real" military life: I did get lines of b***s*** fed to me by recruiters to get me to join the military.
If you're using the ROTC as a way to pay for college, think twice before you sign that dotted line.
There are other loans out there that can get you through school without signing your ass over to Uncle Sam.
