I have been following the Napster debate and realized there is a common misconception on this campus and nationwide regarding what Napster is.
Napster is A peer-to-peer file-sharing service, not THE peer-to-peer file-sharing service. It's just one of dozens.
It happens to be the most popular, but when it goes away or becomes less desirable, the others will take up the slack.
Before a friend told me about Napster, I already had several gigabytes of mp3s (or if you prefer, thousands of dollars worth of stolen copyrighted music).
I was on other file-sharing networks, I got stuff from the campus network here, over IRC, ICQ, websites, even Instant Messenger from friends at other colleges.
Napster has made my searches for music I want easier, but it's not the be-all and end-all of file-sharing.
I can honestly say that Napster's demise won't even slow me down. Napster is only one web-based service, but the Internet is a whole lot more than just the World Wide Web.
