First South provides scholarships for students

First South Credit Union is sponsoring the annual Eula Brown Memorial Scholarship for freshmen and sophomore students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average who are planning to graduate with a business degree from the Fogelman College of Business and Economics.

The $1,000 scholarship will be given in memory of Eula Brown, a pioneer of First South Credit Union.

"Providing educational opportunities for local students is one of the best ways to help the entire community," said Craig Esrael, CEO of First South Credit Union.

"We are pleased to provide this annual scholarship both for the benefit of the recipient and in honor of Eula Brown, who played such a significant role in the beginning of our organization."

This is the first year for the scholarship, Shurden said.

"This is going to be an on-going process," she said. "We are going to offer the scholarship every year."

According to Shurden, applicants must be a US citizen, accepted to The University of Memphis, and a member, child or grandchild of a First South member. Interested students must attend The U of M during the 2001-2002 academic school year.

A one-page essay stating why he/she is deserving of the scholarship should be attached to the back of each application, Shurden said.

Applications can be picked up at any First South Credit Union branch. All entries should be dropped off at any First South branch or mailed to: First South Credit Union, 1575 N. Germantown Parkway, Cordova, Tenn., 38018.

Deadline to submit an application is April 15. Shurden said the scholarship recipient will be notified mid-May.

Applications can be downloaded from the internet at www.firstsouth.com.
