Just six days now and it'll be here.
Valentine's Day.
For weeks now I have been bombarded with the sight of special prices for a dozen roses, plenty of candy ads -- and I am getting sick of all the Hallmark cards.
(Honestly, I am really looking forward to Feb. 15 -- the day after, all candy will be half off.)
Valentine's Day, to me, is a day to spread love around. Then again, we SHOULD spread love everyday.
Sadly enough, the money flows more freely than love actually does.
I often ponder why on one day a year women and men get so crabby because someone doesn't give them a gift. (That should be reserved for not getting anything on yoir birthday.)
What should you NOT DO for Valentine's Day?
Be forewarned, DO NOT USE the following excuses in order to find your valentine.
"Be my Valentine, I've got XFL tickets."
"If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?"
"Be my Valentine, I'm so fresh and so clean, clean."
"Do fries come with that shake?"
"Haven't I seen you somewhere before - in a Mystikal video?"
"I work for the Daily Helmsman, please be my Valentine."
And while I'm dispensing advice, DO NOT under any circumstances carry through with any of the following activities on Valentine's Day.
Do not plan a special evening with your Valentine that includes Domino's pizza, WCW Thunder and Temptation Island.
Do not wait until the last minute and send a virtual card.
(Yeah, I get them too, and the thought is nice, but who wants to say that all they got on Valentine's Day is a really colorful e-mail when everyone else got candy and roses and stuff?)
Do not go on a blind date for Valentine's day. (It's hard enough trying to go out and please the friends that you actually know and have fun with. Why create that type of pressure on the biggest rose-giving day of the year with a complete stranger?)
Do not, above ALL else, tell someone "let's just be friends." (Let them have their day and their dreams, no matter how much you just wanna say NO. You'll have plenty of times to say NO and Valentine's Day is not it!)
So what do you do for Valentine's Day?
Pick three people -- a stranger, a loved one and a friend.
Come up behind them in a public place and surprise them with a big hug, a kiss (be careful where you kiss!) and a loud "Happy Valentine's Day."
It may be embarrasing, but I am sure it is one Valentine's Day gift they won't forget.
