Condoms, the clock tower and construction ... OH MY!
(If you thought last week's topic was off the wall -- Dodgeball -- then you'll really enjoy this week.)
When the semester began, some of the residence halls passed out study break kits to all the residents.
We have all seen these before in some form. Some contain razors, gum, plenty of coupons and a bunch of other stuff that is supposed to "inspire" us throughout the semester.
Well, they threw in an extra little treat this time -- a condom.
What in the world condoms have to do with study breaks I don't know.
Are we supposed to practice great study habits and safe sex at the same time? I guess we ARE really being pushed to be the best students we can be -- in and, um, outside the classroom.
I am not against the idea, I understand the principle. But just because you have a medium through which you can communicate, it does not mean that the message is timely.
Moving on -- how about that clock tower?
I just thought that all it did was tell the incorrect time, on all four sides -- boy was I wrong!
It seems as if we have the clock tower that even has Big Ben beat.
It displays the (still wrong) time on four sides, plays different songs, can be used as an intercom system and can even change colors.
Now that's a clock.
It's nice to know that all our money has gone into some gigantic Timex with paging and indiglo abilities.
These factors in mind, we have to take into account the construction going on across campus.
We are not only renovating and building construction on campus, but we are also constructing a new legacy for The University with our first female President.
Of course, with every construction site there will be some inconvenience and eyesores in the beginning.
But in the end everything usually comes together to work out for the best. Doesn't it?
I wish President Raines the best in her endeavors at this University.
May her reign be progressive and extremely influential to the students, faculty and the Memphis community as a whole.
With these thoughts in mind let us look to the future of The University -- a warm spring day with plenty of happy, well-educated students inhabiting this campus.
We look safe. Better yet, we feel safe. The sun goes down as the clock tower lights up like a gigantic disco ball.
Music begins to play through the pipes and chimes as students take to the UC Lawn for the big party.
Everyone has a parking space, there's a shuttle that transports back and forth from parking lot to party spot, and above all -- the time is indeed correct!
OH MY!
