Tigers hit the road after back to back home wins

The Tigers recorded their biggest Conference USA win of the season when they defeated the St. Louis Billikens 72-63 in overtime Thursday night.

This win extended the Tigers' winning streak to five games.

This win helped build the momentum for Memphis as they proceeded to take on the Houston Cougars Saturday night.

The high-point man in Saturday's game was senior forward Kelly Wise with 15 points and freshman guard Scooter McFadgon following closely with 14 points.

Senior guard Shyrone Chatman scored 12 points and Senior forward Shannon Forman finished with 11 points respectively.

Houston led by seven at the end of the half and held a 44-39 lead with just under 15 minutes to play.

Things turned around when Memphis went on 19-6 run to erase the deficit and built a 58-50 lead with 7:11 to play.

McFagdon scored nine of his 14 points in that run to help spark the Tigers comeback.

Memphis maintained leads of six to eight points through the reminder of the game and eventually held a 10-point lead 66-56 when Marcus Moody scored on an eight-footer in the lane with 1:45 remaining.

After baskets by Patrick Okafor and a pair of 3-pointers by Cominic Smith and Torrence Botts, the Cougars cut the lead to 66-68 with 16.1 seconds left to play.

The Tigers hung on to the game when free throws were made by Chatman and Moody in the final seconds.

Houston shot 39.7 percent from field goal range while Memphis shot 36.1 percent.

The Cougars ultimately outrebounded the Tigers 43-37 but suffered from 15 turnovers compared to nine for Memphis.

The Tigers return to action on Jan. 24th when they travel to New Orleans to face the Tulane Green Wave.
