Letter to the Editor: Al Gore for U of M president? Absurd

I am writing you in response to the Jan. 23 article concerning the possibility of Al Gore being considered for the position of president of the University.

The very suggestion that Al Gore should be considered for this position is absurd.

Even if we were to ignore the fact that he does not even meet the criteria set for this position and his inclusion wouldbe unfair to the other candidates, there are other painfully obvious reasons.

First, Al Gore was neither an effective senator for the state of Tennesse, nor was he an effective vice president of this country. His stance on issues changed with the polls.

Second, over the past several years of his "public service," he has become less than trustworthy. His public statements have ranged from slight embellishments of the truth to statements that were patently untrue.

Third, there is a real likelihood that he may once again try to for for president of the US, leaving him less than two years before we would be searching once again for a president of this University. The people of Tennessee have come to know Al Gore for what he is, which is why he was unable to carry his home state in the past election.

The University of Memphis needs a president with a proven career in higher education, ethics, and administration. Al Gore falls way short of those criteria.
