Froggy 94 is no more.
The country station is officially kaput, and The Buzz has taken over FM 94.1 on the dial.
Launched last Wednesday at 2 p.m., Memphis' newest radio station hopes to draw listeners in with a mix of popular and alternative rock.
In honor of their grand arrival, The Buzz will be playing 5,000 songs in a row, without the interruption of commercial breaks or disc jockeys chattering.
The flow of constant music will stretch on until Feb. 8th, at which point The Buzz will move into regular programming.
"You can turn on your radio and leave it on all day without worrying about changing it," said Jeff Webb, promotions director for The Buzz. "We want to introduce the market to the radio station -- really let everybody get a feel for everything we're doing."
What they're doing is concentrating on a rock based format, while avoiding music from pop icons like Britney Spears. Some of the bands that can be heard on The Buzz include: Creed, matchbox twenty, Nine Inch Nails, Hootie and the Blowfish, Pat Benatar and Prince.
"We've done extensive research and this is what people want to hear. (On other stations) people had to put up with the stuff between this kind of music. A lot of people aren't really big fans of the boy bands after the age of 18 or 19 years old," Webb said. "We keep using the phrase 'We're not your little sister's radio station.' We are what we are calling a Rock 40 radio station."
Webb, who also served as promotions director for the now defunct Froggy 94, said that station's demise was a product of Memphis' declining amount of country music listeners.
"It was a corporate decision based on the shrinking country share in this market," he said. "There's just really not enough interest in country music today in this market to sustain two country music stations."
