University of Memphis head football coach Tommy West will retain several members of Rip Scherer's staff on his 2001 staff but has already begun a search for a new offensive coordinator.
Returning for the 2001 season are former assistant coaches Rick Whitt, Tim Walton, Rick Mallory, Russ Huesman, Charlie Coe and Clay Helton. In addition, John Flowers, who has been the director of football operations for The U of M since the 1985 season, has been retained by West in the same capacity.
Whitt and Walton served as members of the defensive staff last season. Mallory, Coe, Huesman and Helton worked as offensive coaches under Scherer. Former defensive line coach Hank Hughes and quarterback coach Jimmy Kiser were not retained by West.
