Third-graders visit for campus tree lighting

A third-grade class from the Campus School will join U of M faculty and students for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

The U of M's Interim President, Dr. Ralph Faudree, and his wife have invited U of M staff and students to the event -- along with the winner of the holiday card contest, 8-year-old Elizabeth Parker and her classmates.

The 27 children from the Campus School, the elementary school located on Zach Curlin Drive, will get to help the president and his wife decorate and light the tree.

According to Mary Larrick, an art teacher at the Campus School, the children are excited about attending the ceremony.

"They think it's great," said Larrick.

The Campus School Chorus will also be singing holiday carols at the tree lighting.

The holiday card that won the contest pictured a tiger with antlers on it. According to Larrick, Faudree and his wife chose it because they thought that it was the most unusual. The art will be used on the president's annual holiday card.

"It's cute," Larrick said.

The residence halls will also be participating in the Holiday Tree Lighting. The halls will have parties to help with the decorations.

"We support University events," said Heather King, assistant area coordinator for Residence Life.

Many of the residents are looking forward to the event, and think that the tree lighting is going to be lots of fun.

"I am planning to go and be a part of the activities," said Julie Roberts, freshman physical education major.

"Inviting the children will be a wonderful addition," added Amanda Costello, sophomore finance major.
