It's that time of year -- the end of the semester.

Looking back at The Daily Helmsman this semester yields a mixed bag.
On the positive side, The Helmsman relaunched its Website with the addition of an online editor position. We brought readers several great feature stories and one of our editors, Johanna Edwards, was honored with a national award for her writing. In addition, several of our writers have pieces that will be top contenders in the annual Southeastern Journalism Conference competition.
Most of our writers have also improved dramatically over the course of the semester, an accomplishment we often forget about.
Of course, as with any organization, there have been occasions when we dropped the ball. Too many times we missed careless errors or published stories not written to their full potential. And, as with most newspapers, there were the countless stories that never made it into print because we lacked the information, resources or energy to cover an otherwise newsworthy event. A specific apology is due to the Student Government Association, who we chided for not being a driving force on campus, but then failed in our journalistic duties to watch over them.
The good news is that the end of one semester marks the beginning of the next. Just as students get a few weeks relief from classes, The Helmsman staff gets a few weeks respite from the daily grind of publishing a newspaper.
And just as students will return for new classes, The Daily Helmsman will return with new and rejuvenated editors and reporters dedicated to training the next generation of journalists and keeping the community of our University informed.
See you next semester.
