In a two hour and forty-three minute match that featured just one senior on the court and a series of long rallies, the Memphis volleyball team (12-18, 2-12) defeated cross-town rival Christian Brothers University (13-17), 3-2, Tuesday.
CBU came out and dominated the first two games, hitting .316 and .235 while Memphis hit .083 and .211. CBU won game one easily 15-6, and came back to win game two 17-15.
The Tigers recovered to claim games three and four, but the only senior on either team dominated game five.
Memphis's April Harriman downed five consecutive kills in the rally-scored fifth game to pull Memphis ahead 12-5.
When CBU finally sided her out and she rotated to the back row, she stepped up and served an ace for a 13-5 lead. Memphis finished game five, 15-5.
Christian Brothers had five players tally double-digit kills in the loss.
Sophomore Ashely Hollis led the Buccaneers with 20 kills. Junior Jennifer Rockwell added 15 kills and Breanne Boyd and Andy Roettger each added 14 kills. Middle hitter Toya Brown, a force the Tigers could never solve from the middle, had 13 kills.
Memphis got its offense from primarily three hitters. Harriman led the team with a career high 30 kills, while Ginger Garrett added 23 kills and 16 digs in the Tigers' fourth consecutive win. Junior Emily Eichmann added 20 kills from the opposite side. While freshman Brittany Barnett fell just shy of double-digit kills, she finished with eight kills and eight blocks for the evening. Junior Amie Hamilton had a career night, digging up a career-high 32 digs in the win. Memphis finishes its regular season at home Friday and Saturday. The Tigers host Southern Mississippi at 7 p.m., Friday, and host Tulane, Saturday in the home finale at 7 p.m.
