Socially Speaking 11/16

Carpe Diem. Seize the day!

I've had tests, a job, sleep, rent and food to worry about just like everyone else. But for some reason, I chose this week to take some time out and evaluate myself.

I looked through some of my old writings from my undergrad days. Some were pretty good. Others - I wonder what I was thinking at the time? Looking back on my old photos I am still shocked at what I did.

I spent my undergraduate years at Tennessee State University in Nashville, and probably did just about anything and everything.

I worked for the newspaper staff, then quit because of differences with the editor. I started my own underground newsletter, (which almost got me kicked out of school for telling the truth). Worked for a white boss who fired a co-worker and me after we made mention to the fact that she withheld applications submitted by African-American students for work study positions. I ran for Mr. TSU. (Yes, it was a funny sight). I offended a lot of people, but worked my way into an SGA position. Joined the paper again, and finally graduated (with a good GPA). I wouldn't change a thing.

There are students at U of M who will graduate in a few weeks. Others have to wait until May or August. My wisdom and knowledge I am passing on to you is to Seize the Day!

Have you enjoyed your education here?

College should be about learning, in all facets, just not academics. Did you pledge a fraternity or sorority? Go to any parties? Hold an office in campus organizations that helped you to grow? Have you made any important contacts for when you leave school?

If you haven't, why not?

Those graduating in December don't have much time. Those who will be here another semester or longer still have some living to do. Seize the day!

Graduate school will not give you the free time you possess right now. Trust me, these are the best years of your life!

One of my fondest memory's happened six years ago this week. Olympic Gold medalist Wilma Rudolph passed away. As a kid, she endured scarlet fever, whooping cough and polio, but went on to set individual World and Olympic track records and win three gold medals. The memorial service held in our University gym was filled with individuals from far and wide who came to pay honor to this unforgettable lady. In her life, Wilma seized the day.

I urge all students to Seize the Day!

When you leave this University, will you have a "Wilma Rudolph Moment" that will forever exist somewhere inside you? Will you have memories of tears, laughs and all-nighters?

I hope so.
