Pageant raises money for St. Jude

Kappa Alpha Psi is hosting its annual "Miss Kappa Alpha Psi" pageant on Sunday, at 6 p.m. in the UC Ballroom.

Proceeds from the pageant will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Kappa Alpha Psi member Jermaine Johnson said the pageant is one of the fraternity's community service projects.

"This is the third year we have had the pageant," Johnson said. "The first year we raised $1,500. Last year we raised $1,400 and this year we hope to raise more than $1,500 to give to the children."

Johnson is asking all contestants to raise at least $300. The donations can come from family, friends or the community.

Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, a former U of M student and basketball player, donated $5,000 to the fraternity this year for the pageant.

"The pageant will have celebrity judges, including radio personality Stan Bell from K-97," Johnson said.

The pageant will also recognize vice president of student affairs Donald Carson, as well as crime prevention specialist Maurice Williams, who serves as the faculty advisor for the fraternity.

"We will be honoring Dr. Carson and Mr. Williams," Johnson said. "They have been key supporters of the fraternity."

Johnson said the winner of the pageant will receive a scholarship, sponsored by the fraternity.

All proceeds raised by the contestants will be donated to the hospital.

"We want all students to come out and support this fund-raiser," Johnson said.

Williams said the pageant is a show of leadership and scholastics.

"My hope, as with any of the fraternities doing any pageant where African-American women show intelligence, is a positive event," Williams said. "The scholarship element just adds to it."
