Being able to make a difference is what motivates Sarah Haley, an 18 year-old freshman at The U of M, to be involved in the political scene.
Haley was at the Republican campaign headquarters tonight to cheer on her candidate, George W. Bush.
Haley, has volunteered in campaign races since she was a 14-year-old freshman in high school.
"I like being involved," she said. "The process is exciting."
Haley is a Republican and her main reason in working for Bush is because he is pro-life. Even the recent revelations about Bush's drunk driving arrest does not change her opinion of her candidate.
"It happened 24 years ago and he came out and admitted it," she said.
She said she thinks too many young people are apathetic when it comes to voting and being involved in politics.
"They should be voting," she said.
Haley said she thinks the reason young people do not vote is because they are too concerned with themselves.
This is the first election Haley has been eligible to vote in. "I was very excited to vote," she said.
She said she knows there are a lot of people on both sides who lie, cheat and are dishonest. But Haley said she has found there are many people out there who are willing to stand up and do the right thing.
Haley wants to be a constitutional lawyer and aspires a political career herself. Her recent campaign efforts have helped prepare her for what is in store. She recently finished a bus tour for Ed Bryant, who is running for United States Congress. As a volunteer, she held up signs, handed out literature and made phone calls.
She said most people were very nice to her on the phone and were happy to talk with her.
"Out of 175 phone calls that I made, only a few were rude," she said.
