Letter to the Editor: Elena S. Garner gives the JSU's take on recent events in the Middle East

As director of the Jewish Student Union, I find it necessary to state clearly and concisely where this organization stands on recent events in the Middle East.

The JSU is supported by the Jewish community. Its task is to bring together Jewish college students from all walks of life, of varying religious and political views. Our job is to educate and support, not to install dogma. We are proud of our students who maintain ties to their faith arid their people, and will continue to support them.

The JSU absolutely supports the nation of Israel and its official democratic decisions. As Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East, the U.S. also stands behind her.

To those of us who love Israel and have always believed in the possibility of peace, these have been trying times. Those of as who have spent time there, loved its people and worked for its well-being, have learned what it is for a heart to break for a land and all who live there. None of this is easy and there are no clear answers. As talks break down between officials, I personally am frustrated and becoming more hopeless by the moment. As discussions between concerned Americans turn in to battles of whose people have been beat up worse, I begin to wonder how there can be any answers when everyone is only willing to make accusations, not compromises.
