Greek karaoke draws hundreds, raises thousands

The dream of the 90’s was still alive Wednesday night, as University of Memphis fraternities and sororities jammed out to hip-hop and R & B classics to during the Pi Phi Karaoke Night.

Thirteen Greek organizations competed in the dance competition. Last year the event raised more than $16,000 for First Book, a non-profit that gives books to low-income families.

“We are hoping to beat that amount this year,” said Paige Stocking, 20, Pi Beta Phi member and nursing junior. “It’s not actually karaoke but people have lots of fun.”

At least 900 students packed the crowded theatre to watch the karaoke, which is actually choreographed group dance contest.

Many Greeks take months to prepare for the contest. Several other contests also took place as well. Greeks competed in speed reading Dr. Suess books and best home-made wings.
