Autopsy: student electrocuted in dorm over break

New autopsy results for the student who died over winter break revealed that he was most likely killed by electrocution.

Freshman engineering major Joseph Liner's body was discovered Dec. 28 in his dorm room in Richardson Towers South.

Karen Rudolph, public information officer for the Memphis Police Department, said the investigation was closed after the department ruled the death accidental. A police report is expected to be released tomorrow.

According to reports, the 18-year-old accidentally locked himself in a shared bathroom. In an attempt to escape, Liner tried to climb up through the ceiling tiles but fell to the floor of his dorm room, hitting electrical wires on the way down.

Investigators could not confirm the cause of death but said that a mild electrocution seemed the most logical explanation.

Bob Eoff, spokesman for The U of M, said The University is still looking into the incident.

"A young man died, and it's been ruled an accident," he said. "Of course it's serious."

Eoff said The University and MPD thoroughly checked the room after the incident. When findings are complete, The U of M will resolve how to prevent this from occurring in the future.
